How Bituminous Tonnage Calculator Works

Visual calculation flow

Tonnage + 10% order rec
Tons = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³) ÷ 907.185

Step 1: Choose unit system (imperial or metric) and enter length, width, and thickness.

Step 2: Select mix density (Dense Graded, Standard, Open Graded, Stone Mastic, or custom).

Step 3: Calculator computes volume in both cu yd and m³, with weight in lbs and kg.

Step 4: Results show US tons and metric tonnes. Order recommendation includes 10% contingency.

Asphalt Tonnage Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?
Imperial: Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (inches) ÷ 12 × 145 ÷ 2000. Metric: Tonnes = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) ÷ 1000 × 2350 ÷ 1000. This calculator supports both systems and shows results in both US tons and metric tonnes.
What is the difference between tons and tonnes?
A US ton (short ton) = 2,000 pounds = 907.2 kg. A metric tonne = 1,000 kg = 2,205 pounds. 1 US ton = 0.907 tonnes. Always confirm which unit your supplier uses—ordering 10 "tons" could mean 20,000 lbs (US) or 22,046 lbs (metric), a 10% difference!
How much does a dump truck hold?
Single-axle dump truck: 5-6 tons. Tandem (dual-axle): 12-15 tons. Tri-axle: 15-20 tons. Transfer truck/trailer: 25-30 tons. Belly dump: 18-25 tons. Semi end-dump: 22-26 tons. Know truck capacities to plan delivery timing and job site flow.
Why add 10% extra when ordering asphalt?
The 10% contingency covers: variations in base grade, compaction that uses more material than expected, feathering edges, driveway transitions, and typical measurement tolerances. Running short halts the job and adds delivery costs. Small overage can be used for handwork areas or returned to the plant.
