How Asphalt Temperature Calculator Works
Visual calculation flow
Mix Temp °F at plant
→ − Ambient/Wind Cooling factors
→ Cooling Rate °F/minute
→ Compaction Window minutes
Cooling Rate = Base × Wind Factor × Ambient Factor × Thickness Factor Step 1: Enter mix temperature at plant (typically 300-325°F), ambient temp, wind speed, and lift thickness.
Step 2: Calculator factors in wind (speeds cooling), ambient temp, and thickness (thin lifts cool faster).
Step 3: Calculates cooling rate and time before mat drops below compaction-effective temperatures.
Step 4: Shows paving status (Good/Marginal/Not Recommended) with compaction window and warnings.
Asphalt Temperature Calculator FAQs
What temperature should asphalt be for paving?
Hot-mix asphalt leaves the plant at 275-350°F (135-177°C). For proper compaction, mat temperature should be 280-325°F when first rolled. The breakdown roller should finish before the mat drops below 175°F (80°C). Final rolling at 175-200°F. Below 175°F, compaction becomes difficult.
What is the minimum temperature for paving asphalt?
Most DOTs require ambient temperature of at least 50°F (10°C) for standard HMA. Ground surface should also be 50°F+. For thin lifts under 1.5", the minimum rises to 55-60°F because thin layers cool faster. Some warm-mix asphalt (WMA) can be placed at 40°F.
How fast does asphalt cool?
Cooling rate depends on: lift thickness (1.5" cools 2-3× faster than 3"), ambient temp, wind speed, and surface temperature. A 2" lift at 70°F ambient with 10 mph wind cools about 10-15°F per minute. The compaction window is typically 5-15 minutes depending on conditions.
Can you pave asphalt in cold weather?
Cold-weather paving is possible with precautions: use warm-mix asphalt (WMA), increase delivery temps, minimize haul distance, use thicker lifts (3"+), and compact faster. However, most agencies don't allow paving below 40°F air temp or on frozen ground. Quality is always better in warmer conditions.
