How does roof pitch affect shingle quantity?
Steeper roofs have more surface area than the building footprint. Pitch multipliers: 4/12 = 1.054×, 6/12 = 1.118×, 8/12 = 1.202×, 10/12 = 1.302×, 12/12 = 1.414×. A 30×40 ft building with 8/12 pitch: 1,200 sq ft × 1.202 = 1,442 sq ft roof area = 14.4 squares.
What waste factor should I use for roofing?
Simple gable roofs: 5-10% waste. Hip roofs and complex designs: 10-15%. Roofs with dormers, valleys, and multiple angles: 15-20%. Starter and cap shingles are ordered separately. It's better to over-order—leftover bundles can be returned or saved for repairs.
