How Asphalt Rate Calculator Works
Visual calculation flow
Thickness inches
→ Volume/sq yd 9 × (t÷12) cu ft
→ × Density 145 lb/ft³
→ lb/sq yd Application rate
Rate = 9 × (Thickness÷12) × Density (lb per sq yd) Step 1: Choose calculation mode: Coverage Rate, Material Needed, or Production Rate.
Step 2: For coverage rate: enter thickness and density to get lb/sq yd and sq yd/ton.
Step 3: For production: enter paver width and speed to estimate tons/hour capacity.
Step 4: Metric equivalents are calculated automatically (kg/m², tonnes/hour).
Asphalt Application Rate FAQs
What is the standard asphalt application rate?
At 145 lb/ft³ density: 1" thick = 12.1 lb/sq ft or 109 lb/sq yd. 2" thick = 24.2 lb/sq ft or 218 lb/sq yd. Common rates: 110 lb/sy at 1", 165 lb/sy at 1.5", 220 lb/sy at 2". For coverage: 1 ton covers ~18 sq yd at 2" or ~36 sq yd at 1" thick.
How many square yards per ton of asphalt?
At standard 145 lb/ft³ density: 1" thick = 18.3 sq yd/ton, 1.5" = 12.2 sq yd/ton, 2" = 9.2 sq yd/ton, 3" = 6.1 sq yd/ton, 4" = 4.6 sq yd/ton. Quick formula: 2000 ÷ (thickness in inches × 12.1) = sq yd per ton. These rates help estimate truck loads for a project.
What is typical paver production rate?
A standard 8-10 ft wide paver at 20 ft/min places about 50-75 tons/hour (1.5" lift). Highway projects with 12 ft width and 30 ft/min achieve 100-150 tons/hour. Production is often limited by truck delivery, not paver speed. Small residential pavers do 20-40 tons/hour.
How do I convert lb/sq yd to kg/m² for asphalt?
Multiply lb/sq yd by 0.543 to get kg/m². Example: 220 lb/sq yd × 0.543 = 119 kg/m². For thickness conversion, 1 inch = 25.4 mm. A 2" lift at 220 lb/sq yd equals 50mm at 119 kg/m². This calculator provides both imperial and metric rates automatically.
