Tons = Area × (Thickness ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2000

Step 1: Enter project dimensions in feet to calculate area.

Step 2: Enter thickness. Select NCDOT mix type (S9.5A/B surface, I19.0A intermediate, B25.0B base).

Step 3: Choose NC region (Piedmont, Coastal, Mountain) for appropriate PG binder grade.

Step 4: Calculate tonnage with region-specific binder recommendations (PG 64-22 to 70-22).

Asphalt Calculator North Carolina FAQs

What NCDOT asphalt mix types are available?
NCDOT uses Superpave mixes: S9.5A/B (surface course, 9.5mm max aggregate), I19.0A/B/C (intermediate course), and B25.0B/C (base course). "A" has the highest traffic rating. NC also uses Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) for high-stress areas on interstates like I-40 and I-85.
How do NC regional PG binder grades differ?
Coastal NC (Wilmington, OBX) uses PG 64-22 for moderate temperatures. Piedmont (Charlotte, Raleigh) uses PG 64-22 standard or PG 70-22 for high-traffic. Mountain regions (Asheville, Boone) use PG 64-28 for colder winters. High-traffic interstates may require polymer-modified PG 76-22.
What is the typical driveway thickness in North Carolina?
NC residential driveways typically require 2-3 inches of asphalt over 4-6 inches of ABC (Aggregate Base Course) stone. Red clay soil areas (common in Piedmont) may need additional base preparation. The milder coastal climate allows for thinner sections, while mountains should add 0.5-1" extra.
When is asphalt paving season in NC?
North Carolina enjoys a long paving season from March to November, with year-round work possible in coastal areas. NCDOT allows paving when surface temperature exceeds 50°F. Avoid the hurricane season (August-October) on the coast due to rain. Spring and fall offer the best conditions statewide.
