How Asphalt Millings Calculator Works
Visual calculation flow
Area × Thickness Volume
→ × Compaction 15-35% factor
→ × 100 lb/ft³ RAP density
→ Tons + Savings vs virgin
Tons = Area × (Thickness÷12) × Compaction × 100 ÷ 2000 Step 1: Enter project area (sq ft) and desired thickness. Select application type.
Step 2: Choose compaction factor. Loose fill needs more material than compacted projects.
Step 3: For RAP mixed with virgin HMA, select percentage (typically 15-40%).
Step 4: Get tonnage, truck loads, and cost savings estimate vs 100% virgin asphalt.
Asphalt Millings Calculator FAQs
What are asphalt millings/RAP?
Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) or "millings" are granular materials removed from existing asphalt roads using milling machines. They contain valuable aggregate and residual bitumen that can be recycled into new asphalt (15-50% RAP content) or used alone for driveways, parking areas, and base courses.
How much do asphalt millings cost?
Asphalt millings typically cost $10-$25 per ton (compared to $100-$150 for virgin HMA). Delivered prices range from $20-$40/ton depending on quantity and location. Some contractors give away millings for free if you haul them yourself. This represents 70-85% cost savings compared to new asphalt.
How thick should asphalt millings be?
For driveways, apply 3-4 inches of millings (compacted) over 4-6 inches of gravel base. Parking lots need 4-6 inches compacted. The material compacts 15-25%, so order extra: 4" loose = ~3" compacted. For best results, water the millings and compact in hot weather—the residual bitumen helps bind the material.
How much RAP can be used in new asphalt?
Most state DOTs allow 15-30% RAP in surface courses and 30-50% in base/binder courses. Some agencies permit up to 50% with proper mix design adjustments (softer binder grades, rejuvenators). Higher RAP content requires careful testing to account for the aged, stiff binder in the recycled material.
