How Asphalt Material Calculator Works
Visual calculation flow
Total Mix tonnes
→ × Bitumen % Binder content
→ × Filler % Mineral fine
→ Remainder Aggregates
Aggregate % = 100 − Bitumen % − Filler % Step 1: Enter total mix required in tonnes. Use presets or set custom percentages.
Step 2: Adjust bitumen content (typical 5-7%) using the slider. This determines binder quantity.
Step 3: Adjust filler percentage (mineral fine, typically 3-10%). Aggregate % is calculated automatically.
Step 4: Get component breakdown in tonnes and kg with visual proportion bar chart.
Asphalt Material Calculator FAQs
What is the typical bitumen content in asphalt?
Standard hot-mix asphalt contains 4-7% bitumen by weight of total mix. Surface courses typically use 5-6%, while base courses use 4-5%. Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) uses higher binder content (6-7%) for improved durability. The exact percentage depends on aggregate gradation and design requirements.
What are the main components of asphalt mix?
Asphalt consists of: coarse aggregate (gravel/crushed stone, 40-60%), fine aggregate (sand, 20-35%), mineral filler (stone dust/limestone, 3-10%), and bitumen binder (4-7%). Some mixes include additives like polymers for modified binders, fibers for SMA, or recycled materials (RAP) for sustainability.
How much bitumen do I need per ton of asphalt?
At 5.5% binder content: 1 ton (2,000 lbs) of asphalt requires 110 lbs (50 kg) of bitumen. At 6%: 120 lbs (54 kg). For 100 tonnes of mix at 5.5% binder, you need 5.5 tonnes of bitumen and 94.5 tonnes of aggregate materials.
What is mineral filler and why is it important?
Mineral filler is fine powder (passing #200 sieve) made from limestone dust, hydrated lime, or baghouse fines. It fills voids between aggregate particles, stiffens the asphalt binder (creating "mastic"), and improves mix stripping resistance. Typically 3-10% of total mix weight. Too much filler makes mix too stiff; too little causes tender mixes.
